Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary Loan (or ILL) is a cooperative process by which library materials are made available by one institution to another institution and its patrons.

Upon request, Kenyon’s ILL staff makes every attempt to locate and obtain resources not owned by Kenyon, another CONSORT library, OhioLINK or SearchOhio library.  Items may include books, journal and newspaper articles, dissertations, microfilm, AV material and other circulating items.

Submitting Requests

All Kenyon students, faculty, administrators and staff may make use of Kenyon’s ILL services.

To make an Interlibrary Loan request, simply register to use ILLiad (you need register only once), and then access the ILLiad Login Page to access the ILLiad request forms.  One request form must be completed for each item requested, providing as much information as possible.  (It may not be possible to process incomplete requests.)  Citations provided should be as complete as possible (including the ISBN, ISSN or OCLC number is most helpful) and will expedite the processing of your request.

There is currently no charge for ILL requests.  Fees for items not obtainable from free lenders are paid by LBIS-Interlibrary Loan.  These fees are determined by the lending institutions.

Notification and Pickup

Patrons will be notified by email when hard-copy loans are ready for pick-up.  Most requests for articles will be filled electronically, and will be available for download as a PDF via your online ILLiad account.

An ILL transaction can take less than 24 hours (for some articles received electronically) or up to three or four weeks, depending on several factors, including availability and location(s), time of year and degree of difficulty in locating the item.

Limits and Restrictions

Books and other hard-copy materials borrowed through Interlibrary Loan are subject to a number of possible restrictions that may be set by the lending institution.  For example, some items may be designated for library-use only, or may not be renewable.  Books and other hard-copy items borrowed through Interlibrary Loan cannot be placed on course reserve.

Returns and Renewals

Items borrowed through ILL should be returned on or before the due date.  Due dates (and any other special restrictions) are set by the lending library and must be adhered to.  Books borrowed through Interlibrary Loan must be returned to the circulation desk, or to the outside book drop. Please return AV material to the main circulation desk.

Renewals may be requested via your online ILLiad account prior to the due date.  Please note that renewals cannot be granted by Circulation Desk attendants. Also note that renewals are not guaranteed.

Due dates and renewals are set by the lending library.  In order to continue to be good sharing library partners in the worldwide interlibrary loan community we follow the protocols of each lending institution.  Patron library accounts will be blocked after the 3rd over due notice.  Once the item is returned or the replacement fee has been paid then the patron's library account will be reinstated.

Location and Hours

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is located in the Circulation area on the 2nd floor of the Olin and Chalmers Libraries. Office hours are Monday through Friday 8:30am - 4:30pm.  Assistance with Interlibrary Loan may be available during other times when the Library is open.
