Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary Loan (or ILL) is a cooperative process by which library materials not available from Kenyon, Consort, Ohiolink or SearchOhio are made available from institutions that are part of a worldwide sharing community.   Items may include books, journal and newspaper articles, dissertations, microfilm, AV material and other circulating items.

Submitting Requests

All Kenyon students, faculty, administrators and staff may make use of Kenyon’s ILL service.  Requests can be initiated from the Kenyon interlibrary loan portal or directly from Kenyon databases such as Worldcat or K-Search.  Note:  Including complete citation with information such as the OCLC number, ISBN or ISSN will expedite the processing of your request.

For more information on making an ILL request, watch our video "Requesting Material through ILL or Interlibrary Loan," which is part of the library's YouTube series, Middle Path Minute.

There is currently no charge for ILL requests.  Fees for items not obtainable from free lenders are paid by LBIS-Interlibrary Loan.  These fees are determined by the lending institutions.

Notification and Pickup

Patrons will be notified when loans are ready for pick-up or articles available for download by email or text notifications (if the text option was selected in your patron profile). Most requests for articles will be filled electronically, and will be available for download as a PDF via your online interlibrary loan account.

An ILL transaction can take less than 24 hours (for some articles received electronically) or up to three or four weeks, depending on several factors, including availability and location(s), time of year and degree of difficulty in locating the item.

Limits and Restrictions

Books and other hard-copy materials borrowed through Interlibrary Loan are subject to a number of possible restrictions that may be set by the lending institution.  For example, some items may be designated for library-use only, or may not be renewable.  Books and other hard-copy items borrowed through Interlibrary Loan may not be placed on course reserve. At this time, due to COVID-related shipping issues, we will not borrow physical materials (books or audio-visual items) from libraries outside North America, though it may be possible for us to acquire journal articles from overseas libraries. Many libraries are not lending print materials during the pandemic, and this may slow the arrival of items requested by Kenyon patrons.

Returns and Renewals

Items borrowed through ILL should be returned on or before the due date.  Due dates (and any other special restrictions) are set by the lending library and must be adhered to.  Books borrowed through Interlibrary Loan must be returned to the circulation desk, or to the outside book drop. Please return AV material to the main circulation desk.

Renewals may be requested via your online interlibrary loan account prior to the due date.  Please note that renewals cannot be granted by Circulation Desk attendants. Also note that renewals are not guaranteed.

Due dates and renewals are set by the lending library.  In order to continue to be good sharing library partners in the worldwide interlibrary loan community we follow the protocols of each lending institution.  Patron library accounts will be blocked after the 3rd over due notice.  Once the item is returned or the replacement fee has been paid then the patron's library account will be reinstated.
