Duo Two-Factor Authentication

Starting in Spring 2017, Kenyon will begin securing campus services with Duo, a two-factor authentication (2FA) tool.

What is Duo?

Duo is a two-factor authentication (2FA) service that adds an extra layer of security to protect Kenyon’s data. The two-minute video below provides an overview of Duo’s two-factor authentication service.

Just like an ATM card, 2FA secures an account by requiring two factors of ID verification before you can log in:

  • Something you know (such as your password)
  • Something you have (such as a smartphone or verification code)

Duo won’t stop you from revealing your password to a phisher. (Only you can do that.) And if your password gets out, Duo doesn’t prevent someone else from attempting to log into your account.

However, if a Kenyon system is protected with Duo, no one can use your username and password (something that you know) to log into that system unless they can also have the second factor that you’ve enrolled with Duo (something that you have).

How Duo Works

Duo works inline with remote.kenyon.edu to secure your account. Once you enroll with Duo, you’ll still sign into remote.kenyon.edu using your Kenyon username and password. After that, Duo will prompt you to provide a second means of verification in order to enter remote.kenyon.edu.

When you enroll with Duo, you can select among several verification options.

If you have a smartphone, the most secure option is to receive push notifications from the Duo Mobile app. Download Duo Mobile for free from the iOS App Store or Google Play Store.

If you don’t own a smartphone, you can sign up to have Duo call your mobile phone or send you a text message for login confirmation.

For more information about Duo, see our Duo FAQ.
