Notice To Kenyon Mac Users About macOS "Catalina" (Update for Kenyon Employees)

LBIS has completed its testing of the new Apple operating system macOS 10.15 "Catalina" on Kenyon's computing environment.  Kenyon's essential tools and core services work well with the new operating system, and you can proceed with the upgrade via the Apple App Store, as desired.
However, please be advised of the following:
  • 32-bit software will no longer work on Catalina.  The upgrade interface will tell you what software on your computer is not compatible before you upgrade.  Please plan accordingly.
  • The professional audio editing software Avid Pro Tools is currently not compatible with Catalina yet, so users with that software should refrain from upgrading.
  • Information from Apple about this upgrade can be found at:  https://www.apple.com/macos/how-to-upgrade/  This is also a good site to confirm that your hardware is eligible for upgrade, although the majority of Kenyon issued Macs are eligible.
  • Backup your important documents before upgrading.  This can be done via Google File Stream, or a portable drive.  (Note:  If you use Google File Stream,  you will be prompted to relocate your data files once you have upgraded to Catalina.)
  • Once you have taken steps to prepare your Mac for the upgrade (update applications, backup your files, confirm upgrade eligibility for your Mac), you may proceed with the upgrade.
  • Please plan an appropriate amount of time to do the upgrade, which can take anywhere between 60-90 minutes, and should be done while your computer is plugged into power.
  • If desired, LBIS can perform the upgrade for you. Call Helpline at 1-740-427-5700 and be ready to provide the KID of your Mac. Helpline will notify a professional staff member who will contact you to assist with the upgrade.
  • Kenyon's public and departmental Mac labs are not planned to be upgraded to Catalina until next summer.

If you have questions or concerns about upgrading to Catalina, please contact Helpline. If they can’t answer your questions, a professional staff member will contact you.

The Helpline Desk is located in Library B. The desk is open 7 days a week. For more information on how to reach Helpline, see https://lbis.kenyon.edu/facilities-technology/help.
