FINDING ARTICLES

Databases and indexes are collections of citations to articles. Select a database that covers the subject area you are researching. Avoid databases with popular literature (i.e. Article First), if you need to find scholarly articles.

Consult the Help and About sections of each database for the most recent information about topical coverage and the types of information included.

Requesting non-Kenyon journal articles via Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

When you find citations to articles in journals that are not owned by Kenyon College nor available online, you must make an InterLibrary Loan request. It may take 7-10 days for an article to arrive. You will be notified by E-mail when you may pick up the article at the library Circulation Desk. Request an article.

INDEXES AND DATABASES

• AGRICOLA (1970 - present)
  Covers every major agricultural subject; updated monthly by the National Agricultural Library of the US Department of Agriculture.

 

• BasicBIOSIS
  Designed for undergraduate students taking introductory biology courses and non-Biology majors. Database includes popular and scholarly journals. Database includes articles from the current year and most recent four update years.

   

• Biological Abstracts (1980 - present)
  The primary index to the life science journal literature.

   

• Biology Digest (1983 - present)
  Designed specifically for college undergraduates to provide coverage of all life science disciplines.

• CINAHL (1982 - present)
  Online database version of Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature. Journals cover the following topics: Nursing, Allied Health, and Specialized Health.
• Geobase (1980 - )
  Contains citations and abstracts covering worldwide literature on geography, geology, ecology, international development, and their related disciplines.

 

• GeoRef (1785 - )
  Provides access to citations from geology and earth sciences. International coverage beginning in 1983.

   

• Health Source - Consumer Edition
  Full-text for over 190 journals, as well as abstracts and indexing for over 200 general health, nutrition and professional health care publications.

   

• History of Science, Technology and Medicine
  Database describes journal articles, conference proceedings, books, book reviews, and dissertations in the history of science, technology, and medicine and allied historical fields.

• MEDLINE (1999 - present) and Medline (1966 - present)
  Includes information from medical, dental and nursing literature as well as allied health, biological and physical sciences, humanities and information science as they relate to medicine and health care, communication disorders, population biology, and reproductive biology. Medline duplicates PubMed.
  • OLDMEDLINE (1953 - 1965)
    Contains citations to articles from international biomedical journals covering the fields of medicine, preclinical sciences, and allied health sciences. The citations were originally printed in hardcopy indexes published from 1953 through 1965. OLDMEDLINE contains only journal article citations. No abstracts are available.

     

• Science Citation Index Expanded (ISI Citation Index)
  General and cited reference searches are possible. Tutorial.

 

• JSTOR
  Provides full-text access to journal articles from a variety of scholarly disciplines. Available subjects of interest are as follows: Botany; Ecology; General Science; Geography; History of Science.

 

• OhioLINK Electronic Journal Center: Earth Sciences Journals
  Includes the full text science journals from Elsevier, Academic Press, Project Muse, Springer-Verlag and Kluwer Academic. Journal subjects are further broken down into the following categories: Environmental Science and Engineering; Geography; Geology; Meteorology, Climatology, and Oceanography.

 

• OhioLINK Electronic Journal Center: Health Sciences and Medicine Journals
  Includes the full text science journals from Elsevier, Academic Press, Project Muse, Springer-Verlag and Kluwer Academic. Journal subjects are further broken down into the following categories: General Medicine; Internal Medicine; Medical Specialties; Neurology and Neurophysiology; Physiology and Anatomy; Public Health; Surgery; Therapeutics and Pharmacology.

 

• OhioLINK Electronic Journal Center: Life Sciences Journals
  Includes the full text science journals from Elsevier, Academic Press, Project Muse, Springer-Verlag and Kluwer Academic. Journal subjects are further broken down into the following categories: Agriculture; Biochemistry; Biology; Botany; Cytology; Genetics; Microbiology and Immunology; Zoology.

 

• Public Library of Science
  Online journal collection provided by non-profit organization of scientists and physicians committed to making the world's scientific and medical literature a freely available public resource.

INFORMATION LITERACY

Select lessons from the Information Literacy Tutorial. Lessons are designed primarily for first-year students and will assist with selecting and refining a topic ; developing a research strategy ; identifying useful reference sources ; performing efficient searches in the library catalog, databases and web pages; understanding and writing citations and evaluating information

FINDING BOOKS

Use CONSORT to identify available books at Kenyon or another CONSORT library (College of Wooster, Denison University and Ohio Wesleyan).
