Bluesocket SNAP Pilot Project (2008)
Update: This document provides historical information on a change to the residential network that took place during the 2008-09 school year. On 2/17/2009, LBIS moved all student residences to the BlueSocket system. See How To: Uninstall Cisco Clean Access Agent at http://lbis.kenyon.edu/snap/uninstallcaa for removal instructions.
Connecting to the Residential Network With Bluesocket | Frequently Asked Questions |
LBIS wants to improve the way students access the Internet in the residence halls. We've chosen three halls--Hanna Hall, Watson Hall, and the Acland Street Apartments--for a pilot program to test an alternate method of signing on to Kenyon's residential network.
Right now, students use Clean Access Agent (CAA) by Cisco to log into the residential hall network. Under the pilot program, students in selected residential halls will stop using CAA to sign in from their rooms, and instead log into the residential network the same way they do using Bluesocket, the system that manages logins to Kenyon's wireless network in the library and other academic buildings.
Connecting to the Residential Network With Bluesocket
To connect to Kenyon's residential network, first open a web browser (Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox, etc.) You will see the Bluesocket Login page (shown below). If you get a certificate warning, click OK.

Enter your Kenyon username and password and click Log In. It's that simple! The Bluesocket system will automatically log you off when your system has been inactive for 12 hours.
You will need to sign in again after 12 hours of inactivity to continue accessing the Kenyon network.
To logout you can click on Click to logout in the logout pop-up window as shown below. If your web browser blocks pop-up windows, you will need to add resnet-gw.kenyon.edu to its pop-up exception list or you will not see the logout window. At this time, it is only possible to actively log out of Bluesocket by clicking the link in the logout pop-up window. Otherwise, your device will be automatically logged out after 12 hours of network inactivity.

FAQs
- To create a more unified network experience in the residence halls and the academic buildings by using the same authentication method.
- To eliminate the need to install the CAA software on your computer.
- To give better access to 64-bit Windows computers.
What does this mean for me right now?
- To connect to the Internet in these three residence halls, all you need to do is open a web browser. You should be redirected to the new login page automatically. Put in your Kenyon username and password and click Log In.
- If other Kenyon students bring their computers to your room, they will need to use a web browser to sign into Bluesocket before they can access the Internet.
- At this time, DO NOT uninstall the CAA software. If you visit a residence hall that is not in this pilot program, you will still need to use the CAA software to access the Internet.
- This change applies to both wireless and wired network connections in Hanna Hall, Watson Hall and the Acland Street Apartments.
Why Hanna Hall, Watson Hall, and the Acland Street Apartments?
- These buildings are far enough away from other residence halls to prevent wireless confusion. Other residence halls will still be using CAA software and sending out CAA-based wireless signals. We want to minimize how often your computer sees both wireless connection methods.
Will my game console/Skype/iPhone/etc. still be able to connect to the residential network?
- You should be able to access your Skype account without problems. Internet devices with a web browser can connect to the Internet in these residential halls by opening the web browser and entering your Kenyon username and password in the same manner as you do on your computer. For Internet-able devices that do not have a web browser (such as some gaming consoles or streaming video devices), contact Helpline at x5700 and ask to have them added to the Gaming Role.
Can I connect multiple devices to the residential network?
- You can be signed in to Bluesocket on up to three devices. More than three devices can be decided on a case-by-case basis. Contact Helpline at x5700 and ask them to enter a ticket to Kenyon's Network and Security Analyst, Niranjan Davray.
If I sign on in my room, will the Internet work in the library?
- Although the method of authentication will be the same, you will still need to open a web browser and input your Kenyon username and password to use the Internet in any academic building.
What Kenyon network services can I use?
- Web browsers, email clients, and chat clients should work without any problems. You should be able to access your H: drive and the P: drive. Other services will be decided on a case-by-case basis.
How can I log out if I have closed all browser windows? How can I log out if my device, such as an iPhone, doesn't allow pop-up windows?
- Closing all browser windows or devices, such as iPhones, that do not allow pop-up windows will be logged off of the network after 24 hours of inactivity.
