Picture of Old Kenyon fire, 1949Old Kenyon Fire Video - On February 27, 1949, the College's oldest and most-emblematic building, Old Kenyon, burned in a terrible fire. Nine students were killed. The College moved immediately to salvage some remaining stone from the burned-out shell for reconstruction of the building. With his camera, Lee Schermerhorn '51 caught the fire in progress on that dark night, and chronicled both the final destruction of the ruins and the reconstruction of Old Kenyon over the next year.

Old Kenyon sketchAbout the Department

The Greenslade Special Collections and Archives, housed in Olin and Chalmers Libraries, consists of two main collections: Special Collections, and the Kenyon College Archives. Special Collections includes rare books and special subject research collections. The Kenyon College Archives contain material related to the history and people of Kenyon College.

Materials housed in the department do not circulate, and the stacks are closed to researchers. Materials may be consulted, however, in the Special Collections Reading Room by anyone with valid photo-identification. Use of Special Collections and Archives materials is subject to a set of regulations.

The department is named in honor of Thomas Boardman Greenslade K1931, longtime College archivist and loyal Kenyon alumnus.
