FINDING ARTICLES

Databases and indexes are collections of citations to articles. Select a database that covers the subject area you are researching. When you need scholarly literature, avoid databases with popular journals and magazines (i.e. Article First, Periodical Abstracts). Instead, use one of the databases listed below.

Consult the Help and About sections of each database for information about topical coverage and the types of information included.

Use lessons in the Information Literacy Tutorial or contact a librarian for further suggestions.

Databases

The following databases include citations and some abstracts and full-text, from scholarly literature.

  • AccessScience: an online encyclopedia of science and technology.
  • Applied Science and Technology Abstracts: (1983 - ) Subject areas include engineering, mathematics, physics, and computer technology.
  • INSPEC: (1969 - ) Coverage includes computing and control, and information technology.
  • Microcomputer Abstracts: (1989 - ) Includes abstracts of feature articles, news, columns, programs, product announcements, and product reviews (of software, hardware, and books).
  • Science Citation Index Expanded (1980 - ) Indexes 5,300 major journals across 164 scientific disciplines. General subject and cited reference searching are possible.
Off Site Journals

When you find citations to articles in journals that are not owned by Kenyon College nor are available online, you must make an Inter Library Loan request. It may take 7-10 days for an article to arrive. You will be notified by E-mail when you may pick up the article at the library Circulation Desk. Request an article online.

INTERNET RESOURCES
  • Formal methods - the site contains information on formals and is useful to researchers, professionals, and graduate students working in the area.
  • Search the Acronym database - the search looks not only for the basic letters but for other acronyms that include them.
INFORMATION LITERACY

Select lessons from the Information Literacy Tutorial. Lessons are designed to assist you in: Selecting and refining a topic | Developing a research strategy | Identifying useful reference sources | Performing efficient searches in the library catalog, databases and web pages | Understanding and writing citations | Evaluating information.

FINDING BOOKS

Use CONSORT to identify books at Kenyon or another CONSORT partner library (College of Wooster, Denison University and Ohio Wesleyan). If a an item you want to borrow is owned at Kenyon, check the floorplans to find the exact location. If an item is owned by a CONSORT partner, or an OhioLINK partner, request the item online.   • AccessScience is an online encyclopedia of science and technology. It contains encyclopedia articles, dictionary terms, biographies, research updates and science news.
