FINDING ARTICLES
Databases and indexes are collections of citations to articles. Select a database that covers the subject area you are researching but avoid databases with popular literature (i.e. Article First), when you need scholarly articles.
Consult the Help and About sections of each database for information about topical coverage and the types of information included.
Use lessons in the Information Literacy Tutorial or contact a librarian for further suggestions.
Databases
The following databases contain citations and some abstracts and full-text articles from scholarly literature.
- Applied
Science and Technology Abstracts (1983-) Subject areas covered
include engineering, mathematics, physics, and computer technology.
-
Science Citation Index Expanded (1980-) General subject and cited reference searches are possible. Tutorial.
- Compendex
(1980-) Comprehensive interdisciplinary engineering database.
- History
of Science, Technology and Medicine (1975 - ) Contains four
bibliographies: the Isis Current Bibliography of the History of
Science (HSS), the Current Bibliography in the History of Technology
(Technology and Culture), Bibliografia Italiana di Storia della
Scienza nd the Wellcome Library for the History and Understanding
of Medicine.
- INSPEC (1969 - ) Citations to scientific and technical journals and conference proceedings in physics, electrical engineering and electronics, computing and control, and information technology.
Physics Journals at Kenyon College
- Free access to portions of Spectrum Online, the magazine of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.
Off Site Journals
When you find citations to articles in journals that are not owned by Kenyon College nor available online, you must make an Inter Library Loan request. It may take 7-10 days for a photocopy of the article to arrive at Kenyon. You will be notified by E-mail when you may pick up the article at the library Circulation Desk. Request an article.

INFORMATION LITERACY
Select lessons from the Information Literacy Tutorial. Lessons are designed to assist you in: Selecting and refining a topic | Developing a research strategy | Identifying useful reference sources | Performing efficient searches in the library catalog, databases and web pages | Understanding and writing citations | Evaluating information.
FINDING BOOKS
Use CONSORT to identify books at Kenyon or another CONSORT partner library (College of Wooster, Denison University and Ohio Wesleyan). If a an item you want to borrow is owned at Kenyon, check the floorplans to find the exact location. If an item is owned by a CONSORT partner, or an OhioLINK partner, request the item online. Guide to requesting items owned by CONSORT or OhioLINK partner.
COURSE GUIDES
Course guides are created for teaching faculty by Library Liaisons upon request.
