INFORMATION LITERACY TUTORIAL

Select lessons from the Information Literacy Tutorial. Lessons are designed to assist you in:

  • Selecting and refining a topic
  • Developing a research strategy
  • Identifying useful reference sources
  • Performing efficient searches in the library catalog, databases and web pages
  • Understanding and writing citations
  • Evaluating information.
INTERNET RESOURCES

Choose Internet resources with a critical eye. When in doubt, assess each site or posting with evaluation criteria.

FINDING BOOKS

Use CONSORT to identify books at Kenyon or another CONSORT partner library (College of Wooster, Denison University and Ohio Wesleyan). If a an item you want to borrow is owned at Kenyon, check the floorplans to find the exact location. If an item is owned by a CONSORT partner, or an OhioLINK partner, request the item online. Guide to requesting items owned by CONSORT or OhioLINK partner.

FINDING ARTICLES

Databases and indexes are collections of citations to articles. Select a database that covers the subject area you are researching. Avoid databases with popular literature (i.e. Article First), if you need to find scholarly articles. Consult the Help and About sections of each database for information about topical coverage and the types of information included. Use lessons in the Information Literacy Tutorial for further suggestions.

Databases

The following databases are collections of citations, some abstracts, and some full-text articles in scholarly literature. For searching tips, read the About and Help screens in each database or contact a librarian.

  • PsycINFO (1887 - 1966) (1967 - ) is the primary index of psychological literature. It indexes over 1300 journals, English language books and book chapters, dissertations and technical reports. When it is available, there will be a link on the right of the screen to Retrieve Full Text. If you click on that link, another browser window will open and you will have the option to download the full text of the article. Tips for Searching Historical PsycINFO.
  • MedLine (1966 - present) includes information from medical, dental and nursing literature as well as allied health, biological and physical sciences, humanities and information science as they relate to medicine and health care, communication disorders, population biology, and reproductive biology. It indexes over 3,600 journals, plus selected monographs of congresses and symposia (1976-1981).
Selected Print and Online Neuroscience Journals at Kenyon
Off Site Journals

When you find citations to articles in journals that are not owned by Kenyon College nor available online, you must make an Inter Library Loan request. By placing an Inter Library Loan (ILL) request, you are requesting that another library make a photocopy of the article and mail it to Kenyon. It may take 7-10 days for an article to arrive. You will be notified by E-mail when you may pick up the article at the library Circulation Desk. You may request an article online or with a print form, available at Circulation, the InfoDesk or in the ILL office.
