Additional periodicals, though not published by or about African Americans, may also be useful. Two major publications include The New York Times (1851-present on microfilm) and Harper's Weekly (1857-1900 on microfilm). Additionally, the library subscribes to HarpWeek: The Civil War Era and Reconstruction I, which includes the full text of Harper's Weekly from 1857-1871.

To search for relevant articles in The New York Times, use The New York Times Index [REF AI21 N45]. For Harper's Weekly, use The Nineteenth Century Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature [REF A13.R496] and the Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature [REF AI3.R4]. You may also find the Reader's Guide Retrospective useful; it indexes 375 popular periodicals published in the United States from 1890-1982.
