Using Mac OS X 10.1+ on the Kenyon Network

This document will assist you in connecting your Mac OS X 10.1+ computer to the shared drives on the Kenyon network from any Internet connection, either on campus or off campus.

What You Need to Know

To connect to shared network resources, you will need a working connection to the network and your network username and password. Your password should not be longer than 8 characters. As a Mac user, you must change your password on a Windows workstation (available in any public lab). To do so, login to the network and then press Ctrl+Alt+Del. Click the Change Password button to access the Change Password dialog box.

Recently new Windows file servers replaced several of our older servers. You will need to know the names of the new servers that you wish to access. Here is a summary of the changes involving these servers:

  • Student H: drives have moved to rhine.kenyon.edu.
  • Faculty H: and staff H: drives are on tiber.kenyon.edu server.
  • Shared department folders are on the departmental O: drive on vistula.kenyon.edu.
  • The P:(Public) drive is on potomac.kenyon.edu. (This drive contains the P:\Temp, P:\Class\..., P:\Data\..., and student organization folders).
  • The public web server www2.kenyon.edu is on ellipse.kenyon.edu, where the personal web server personal.kenyon.edu also resides.
  • All networked printers are on the printers.kenyon.edu server.

Accessing a Network Drive with a Mac OS X 10.1+ computer:

  1. Click on the Finder icon in the OS X Dock at the bottom of the screen
  2. Choose the Go option from the top menu bar and select Connect to Server
  3. You will see a Connect to Server window where you will have to enter the server name you want to connect to in the Server Address field .
  4. Type in the server name as follows:
    • If you are a student connecting to your H: drive on rhine.kenyon.edu:
      Enter in the Address box: smb://rhine.kenyon.edu/username$ (remember the $ sign)
    • If you are staff or faculty connecting to your H: drive on tiber.kenyon.edu:
      Enter in the Address box: smb://tiber.kenyon.edu/username$ (remember the $ sign)
    • If you are staff or faculty connecting to shared departmental folders on the new O:(Vistula) drive:
      Enter in the Address box: smb://vistula.kenyon.edu/divison (substitute division name)
    • If you are connecting to the P:(Public) drive on potomac.kenyon.edu:
      Enter in the Address box: smb://potomac.kenyon.edu/Public (Public now contains the P:\temp, P:\class\..., P:\data...and student organization folders.
    • If you are connecting to the personal web server ellipse.kenyon.edu:
      Enter in the Address box: smb://ellipse.kenyon.edu/username
  5. To place the server name in the Favorite Servers list so that you don't have to type it in the next time, click the Plus (+) sign to the right of the Server Address Field.
  6. Click the Connect button.
  7. A login window will appear.
  8. Enter your username and password and make sure that the Workgroup/Domain field displays Kenyon. Click OK or press the ENTER key to login to the server.
  9. Once connected to the server of your choice, an alias (icon) for the network drive and server you just connected to will now appear on your Finder screen. Depending on the server, the icon will be named as described below:
    • If you connected to your H: drive on tiber, rhine or your personal web space on ellipse, this alias will be named yourusername
    • If you connected to your departmental (O:) drive on vistula, it will be named after your division or department.
    • If you connected to the P: (Public) drive on potomac, it will be named Public.
  10. You can now double-click this alias to access your desired network drive. Note: This alias disappears when you logout of the computer. When you next login to the computer, you will have to click Go-Connect to Server again to connect unless you create a permanent alias. Instructions for doing so are given below.

Create a Mac Alias for a Network Drive

An alias is a small file that does nothing but point to another item (such as an application, document, folder, disk or server). When you double-click the alias, the original item opens. Aliases make it easy to find and open items and to connect to network drives. An alias has the same icon as the original item, but its name appears in italics. Many Macintosh users will create desktop aliases to allow quick access to the network drives they use often.

To create an alias:

  1. Click once on the small network drive icon that just appeared on your Finder screen (see No. 9 above).
  2. Click File in the top Menu bar, then Make Alias.
  3. Another icon labeled ...Alias appears near the first icon. This alias icon can be used from now on, instead of clicking Go-Connect to Server to connect to the network drive of choice.

Connect to Additional Network Drives

You can repeat these steps as necessary to connect to and create aliases for additional shared network drives.
