Student account sends spam, causes mail delays
A Kenyon student account was used by hackers to send thousands of spam messages on the morning of September 3rd, causing slowdowns in the delivery of e-mail off campus. Some e-mail providers began to block all mail from Kenyon in response to the flood of spam. Kenyon's mail system eventually began catching the outgoing spam and LBIS staff members were able to identify the account and disable it. All afternoon on the 3rd, LBIS staff contacted e-mail providers, asking them to stop blocking Kenyon mail. By 6:00 p.m. the volume of backlogged mail was mostly gone, as Gmail and Yahoo mail began flowing again. Some large e-mail providers, including comcast.com and verizon.net, were still blocking Kenyon mail as of 7:30 p.m. It is expected that the problem won't be completely resolved for at least another week.
