Media Lab

Editing Resources

The Multimedia Collections Unit has six computers intended for both the creation and manipulation of digital still and moving images. It is a campus resource, intended for use by all constituents of the Kenyon College Libraries including students, faculty, administrators and staff. Two workstations are housed within the Multimedia Collections unit, and are available for use during the posted hours of that department. Note that the hours of this department vary from the posted hours for the library facility. Four additional workstations are arranged together just outside the Multimedia Collections unit on the second floor of the library, and are available all open hours of the library.

This lab is not intended to be an instructional space, and is not configured to support instruction sessions for classes. It is to be a lab for individual use to create multimedia materials in support of the general academic program at Kenyon.

Digital recording equipment, such as camcorders and tripods, may be checked out at the Main Circulation Desk. Equipment Available for checkout

Recognizing that this laboratory is a shared resource for the Kenyon community, and that that working with digital multimedia materials require extraordinary computing and time resources, LBIS has developed policies (scroll down) to help ensure access to these resources to the broader community as necessary.

Instructions

iMovie Tutorial

If you want to make a quick DVD copy of your camcorder footage, follow these easy instructions: One Step DVD

General Tips: Working with digital video requires very robust resources, including hardware, software, storage capacity and time. For storage, five minutes of raw digital video footage requires one gigabyte of media. The time required to finish an editing project is directly related to the level of complexity of the project. For complex projects including multiple transitions, titles, and other effects, one can expect to spend up to 100 minutes digitizing, editing, and outputting one minute of final video. Thus a five-minute video could require up to 500 minutes of editing time to complete.

A portable Firewire drive is recommended for most video projects.

A quick and handy resources for learning how to edit video clips can be found at movies.atomiclearning.com/highed/imovie_hd. These short video tutorials about iMovie HD, the software available on the Multimedia Department's video editing stations, can help you with tackling an entire video editing project, or simply get you over a particular hurdle in iMovie.

Access Policies

  1. Members of the Kenyon Community wishing to use this station may do so on a first-come, first-served basis.
  2. Work may be saved to the local drive while the machine is in use. However, LBIS recommends saving all work to a portable Firewire drive, or a DVD. LBIS is not responsible for and will not guarantee that files stored overnight locally on this machine will be available the following day.
  3. This workstation will be regularly cleaned and restored to default settings. This will automatically delete any user files stored on this machine.
  4. Storage media such as writable CDs and DVDs are available for purchase from the Kenyon College Bookstore.
  5. Requests for instruction in using Media Lab facilities must be made at least 72 hours in advance and should be made to Paul Mollard in the Multimedia department (mollardp@kenyon.edu). Requests for instruction not made in advance may or may not be filled based upon staff availability.
  6. LBIS reserves the right to make additions, revisions, or deletions to these policies during the course of the academic year.
