Interlibrary Loan Services

Interlibrary Loan

Purpose

Interlibrary Loan (or ILL) is a cooperative process by which library materials are made available by one institution to another institution and its patrons.

Upon request, Kenyon’s ILL staff makes every attempt to locate and obtain resources not owned by Kenyon, another CONSORT library, or OhioLINK library.  Items may include books, journal and newspaper articles, dissertations, microfilmed materials, and other circulating documents.

Who Has Access

All Kenyon students, faculty, administrators and staff may make use of Kenyon’s ILL services.

Submitting Requests

Before submitting a request to ILL, it is important to search CONSORT and OhioLINK to make sure that books are not owned by Kenyon or another CONSORT library, or by OhioLINK, and that Journals are not owned by Kenyon.

To make an Interlibrary Loan request, simply register to use ILLiad (you need register only once), and then access the ILLiad Login Page to access the ILLiad request forms.  One request form must be completed for each item requested, providing as much information as possible.  (It may not be possible to process incomplete requests.)  Citations provided should be complete and accurate in order to avoid delays in processing.

Turnaround

An ILL transaction can take as little as 24 hours (for some articles received electronically) or up to three or four weeks, depending on several factors, including availability and location(s), time of year and current workload, degree of difficulty in locating, mail service, etc.

Charges

There is currently no charge for ILL requests.  Fees for items not obtainable from free lenders are paid by LBIS-Interlibrary Loan.  These fees are determined by the lending institutions.

Notification and Pickup

Patrons will be notified by email when hard-copy loans are ready for pick-up.  Most requests for articles will be filled electronically, and will be available for download as a PDF via your online ILLiad account.  (In the event that an article request is not filled electronically, photocopies of articles will be available for pick-up at the circulation desk in the library.)

Limits and Restrictions

Books and other hard-copy materials borrowed through Interlibrary Loan are subject to a number of possible restrictions that may be set by the lending institution.  For example, some items may be designated for library-use only, or may not be renewable.  Books and other hard-copy items borrowed through Interlibrary Loan cannot be placed on course reserve.

Returns and Renewals

Items borrowed through ILL should be returned on or before the due date.  Due dates (and any other special restrictions) are set by the lending library and must be adhered to.  Books borrowed through Interlibrary Loan must be returned to the circulation desk, or to the outside book drop, and should never be placed on shelves, or book trucks.  A/V items borrowed through interlibrary loan must be returned only to the circulation desk.

Renewals may be requested via your online ILLiad account prior to the due date.  Please note that renewals cannot be granted by Circulation Desk attendants. Also note that renewals are not guaranteed.

Overdues

Fines for overdue ILL items are $1.00 for the first day, $2.00 for the second day, and $3.00 for each additional day overdue.  Once the item is returned, an invoice will be sent to the user.  If not paid within 30 days, student fines will be charged to the student’s account.  Faculty and staff fines will be charged to the individual’s department.
