Windows: Accessing Public Printers

After identifying the name of your chosen printer, you must configure your computer using the instructions below.

  1. At the Windows desktop screen click the Start | Settings | Printers.
  2. Double-click the Add Printer option.
  3. Click Network Printer Server and then click the Next button.
  4. In the Specify a Printer window, select Connect to this printer.
  5. In the Name field, type the name of the printer as: \\printers.kenyon.edu\printername (example: \\printers\cha3hp).
  6. If a login box appears somewhere in this process, enter your username as kenyon\username (example: kenyon\jonesb) and your network password. Click OK.
  7. When asked if you wish to make this printer your default, answer accordingly.
  8. Click the Finish button. The selected printer should now appear in your list of available printers.
  9. For departmental users only: You can print a test the printer by placing the cursor on the printer name in the list of printers and clicking the right mouse button. In the drop-down list, click the Properties option. A new screen will appear. Click the Print Test Page button, then click OK . A test page should print if the printer has been correctly set up.

Adding additional printers: If you ever experience problems with your default printer, it is a good idea to have another nearby printer set up for printing. Follow the instructions above for adding a printer, with one change: When asked if you want to change your default printer to this printer that you are currently adding, answer No. Click Next to continue. If you are a student experiencing problems printing to a lab printer, you can use the above instructions to add a public printer in another lab to print out your paper.
