Kenyon Network

Network drives:

  • Kenyon has many network drives that store data for various constituent groups. The network drives that you may be using are described below:
    • Student H: drives are on the rhine.kenyon.edu server. Personal student H: drive accounts are allowed 300MB of personal file storage space.
    • Staff H: drives are on the tiber.kenyon.edu server. Personal staff H: drive accounts are allowed 250MB of personal file storage space.
    • Faculty H: drives are on the tiber.kenyon.edu server. Personal faculty and adjunct instructors' H: drive accounts are allowed 250MB of personal file storage space.
    • G: drive (\\Potomac\Software) on potomac.kenyon.edu server. It contains network software, whose access is often limited to certain academic departments for their course work. Note: Network software is not available to student residence hall locations.
    • O: drive on vistula.kenyon.edu server. This is a departmental drive where academic and administrative departments can share files and projects among members.
    • P:(Public) drive on potomac.kenyon.edu server. This drive is used for file sharing by College groups. Some folders on this drive are accessible to all users while others are open only to academic course members or student organization members.
      • P:\temp folder is a public storage area on the P: drive. It is a strictly temporary space for sharing files with any Kenyon user, but be aware that anyone can read, edit or delete the files! Files are deleted by the system automatically one week after being placed there.
      • P:\class\dept\classname... folder is for faculty to share files with members of a class. Members can read and edit the files.
      • P:\data\dept\classname... - In these folders faculty can also share files (read only) with members of a class.
      • Student organizations may request network accounts for their group on the P: drive. Organization officers must go in person to the Student Activities Center (SAC) to apply for an account.
      • Instructions for setting folder access permissions on P:\ drive folders can be found in the document Setting Access Permissions for Folders and Files at: http://lbis.kenyon.edu/help/ntnetwork/accesspermissions.htm
  • Your network and email password
    • Your network username and password are identical to your email account username and password. When you change your network password, you automatically change your email password and vice versa. (Instructions for changing your password are in next section).
    • Passwords are case-sensitive (make sure the Caps Lock key is not turned on when typing the password).
    • Rules for setting a password have recently changed. They are described below.
    • An easy formula to remember for setting a password: at least 8 characters, 1 uppercase letter, 1 number
      Examples of valid passwords are: Farm6true, ableStop4, Favors76, Dominion2
    • Rules for setting a new password:
      • they expire after 180 days (6 months) and must be changed
      • minimum length is 8 characters
      • former passwords cannot be re-used--they must change by at least one character
      • password must not contain all or part of the user's account name
      • password must meet complexity requirements:
        * not contain all or part of the user's account name
        * must contain characters from at least three of the following four categories: English uppercase characters (A through Z); English lowercase characters (a through z); base 10 digits (0 through 9); non-alphabetic special characters (for example, !, $, #, %).
      • Complexity requirements are enforced whenever passwords are changed or created.
  • Changing your network/email password (you can use either of the methods below):
    • Using your network account (on campus): Using a college-owned Windows computer , login to the network with your username and password . Once logged in, hold down the Ctrl, Alt, and Delete keys simultaneously. In the window that appears, click the Change Password button and follow the on-screen instructions. You will have to type in your new password twice to confirm it.
    • Using WebMail (on or off campus): In your web browser go to URL webmail.kenyon.edu. Click on Set Account Options under the Support section. On the next screen select your mail server. Login with your username and password. Click the General tab if that screen is not already displayed. Fill in the Password section with your old and new password as indicated. (Do not checkmark Erase Password box). Click Apply button. From now on use your new password when logging into your email account or the network.
  • Accessing the Kenyon network:
    • Using college-owned Windows computers (in public labs and college offices): Upon employment at Kenyon or admission as a student, you are automatically assigned a network username ID and password for connection to the Kenyon network. To login to the network, press the Ctrl, Alt and Delete keys simultaneously to make the network login box appear. Type in your username and network password. The domain field should display Kenyon. Network drives are automatically mapped upon login on most college-owned computers.
    • Using a Mac (in college offices): You must configure your computer to (1) connect to the network and (2)access the network drives. For these two sets of Mac instructions, see the section Kenyon Network at: http://lbis.kenyon.edu/technology
    • Using a student Windows or Mac computer (in a residence hall): You must configure your computer to (1)connect to the network and (2)access the network drives. See section Student Computing at: http://lbis.kenyon.edu/technology for these (2) sets of instructions for your computer's operating system.
      • Residential Network Bluesocket authentication window :  When you first connect to the network, open a web browser (such as Mozilla FireFox), and you will be directed to the Residential networking Bluesocket authentication window.
    • "Locked out of network":The Kenyon network has a lockout feature: If you try to login to the network or email account but are unsuccessful after 10 attempts, you'll be locked out for 30 minutes. This is for security reasons to prevent illegal access to your account. You can either wait out the 30 minutes before trying to login again or call the HelpLine at 5700 for assistance.
  • The student residential wireless network:
    • The Kenyon residential wireless network (student residence halls) is available in residence halls and requires student Windows users to login through the Bluesocket authentication window to connect to the network. This login window automatically appears the first time a web browser is opened. Login with your network username and password.
    • Be sure to disconnect your network cable before trying to access the wireless network!
    • To set up your Windows or Mac laptop for student residential wireless networking, see Connecting to the Kenyon Residential Wirelss Network at: http://lbis.kenyon.edu/snap/wireless/index.htm
    • Note: Be sure your wireless card is not configured for "ad-hoc" wireless or it can interfere with others' network connectivity. To check whether it is or not, see the instructions in Don't Broadcast! Turn off Ad-Hoc Wireless at: http://lbis.kenyon.edu/snap/wireless/adhoc.htm
    • Personal wireless network devices are not allowed in the residence halls because they interfere with Kenyon's wireless network. Students having rogue wireless devices in their rooms risk having them confiscated.
  • The Kenyon wireless network (academic and administrative buildings):
    • The Kenyon wireless network is now operational in a majority of academmic and administrative buildings. It requires users to login through the BlueSocket authentication window to connect to the network. Be sure to disconnect your network cable before trying to access the wireless network!
    • To set up your Windows or Mac laptop for wireless networking in the academic and administrative buildings, see Connecting to the Kenyon Wireless Network (acad. & admin. buildings) at:http://lbis.kenyon.edu/wireless
    • The Kenyon wireless network (in acad. & admin. buildings) is available to both Kenyon members and the public (guests). It can be accessed by getting into a web browser. A login screen will appear where you should enter your network username and password.  Any Kenyon employee or student can sponsor a guest of Kenyon (for example, a guest lecturer, a parent, or a visiting colleague from another institution) and request an account for the guest to use the campus wireless network. The account is temporary--only active for up to seven days. The Kenyon sponsor is responsible for the behavior and actions associated with the guest account.  For more information on temporary wireless guest accounts, please contact the LBIS Helpline at 427-5700.
    • Both wireless networks will work with most Windows and Mac network cards, but some cards may need to be reconfigured to make them work.
  • Backups of files on network drives:
    • Backups of all network drive data are performed daily by the system, usually some time between midnight and 6am. It is possible to recover missing or corrupt files if your file existed intact on the network before the nightly backup.
    • Students, faculty and staff are strongly urged to save their files to their H: drive to take advantage of the automatic backups.
  • Over quota H: drive:
    • You are given a specific amount of allotted space on the network drives to which you have access. If you exceed your individual H: drive quota, you won't be able to save new files to your personal H: drive account until you delete some old files to make room. Files on Windows systems can be deleted using the Windows Explorer or My Computer file manager utilities.
    • For Mac users with H: drive accounts over quota, removal of old files must be done on a Windows computer (available in public labs) using Windows Explorer or My Computer. The reason for this is that Macs lock all files when the drive quota is exceeded.
