Note: If your computer exhibits "flakey" or slow performance symptoms, spyware/adware may have to be removed first before disinfecting viruses from your computer. (See section below: Check for spyware/adware on computer).

Check for Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition:

• Check if computer has Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition (SAVCE).
• Connect network cable. Check and update virus definitions with LiveUpdate if necessary.

If SAVCE is NOT on computer, install SAVCE:

• Connect network cable and download SAVCE to desktop from antivirus.kenyon.edu. (If unable to connect to network, download from SAVCE CD). Disconnect network cable.
• Check for and uninstall other antivirus software on computer (see Uninstall SAVCE in blue binder at side table).
• Install SAVCE from Setup icon on desktop (see Install SAVCE in blue binder).
• Connect network cable and run LiveUpdate to update virus definitions from the Internet. (See Run LiveUpdate in blue binder).

Run a full virus scan on the computer's hard drive:

• Shut down and start up computer in Safe Mode (see Safe Mode section in blue binder).
• Run scan and identify any viruses that are not removable (see Perform Full System Scan in blue binder).

Remove viruses manually that weren't deleted or quarantined by SAVCE:

• Find virus' fixtool or print manual removal instructions on Symantec's website.
• Disable System Restore on XP computers before removing viruses. (See Disable System Restore section in blue binder)
• Follow instructions for removing virus. Run full virus scan again to confirm computer is clean.

Update all critical Windows Updates or Mac Software Updates:

• Connect network cable. If using Windows, get into web browser and go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com If using a Mac, select Apple menu > Software Updates.
• Install all critical updates. (See Critical Updates-Windows or Software Updates-Mac in blue binder).
• Restart computer and re-check if any other critical updates are still needed. Restart computer again.
• Set "automatic updates" (see Automatic Updates-Windows or Software Updates-Macs in blue binder)

Check for spyware/adware on computer:

• Download and install Spybot (freeware at www.spybot.info) from Internet or SAVCE CD.
• Update its files from Internet to have most current spyware/adware removal files. Run Spybot.
• Adaware's (www.lavasoft.com) personal version can also be downloaded free from Internet by students themselves.

Install alternative web browser (FireFox) to minimize virus/spyware/adware problems:

• Go to www.mozilla.org and download Mozilla FireFox. Install FireFox on computer.
