Government Documents - Departments and Agencies

Department and Agency Research

If you're unsure where to begin your research, try the Agency Approach. This tutorial from the American Library Association's Government Documents Round Table (ALA-GODORT) will help you find government information on the internet by identifying and "mining" government agencies' websites.

You can also consult the United States Government Manual to locate agencies and departments and to get an overview of the structure of the U.S. government. The United States Government Internet Manual deals more specifically with finding government information online, and is located near the Information Desk (Infodesk JK421 .U567 2007).

If the agency's website doesn't have the information you need, try searching in CONSORT with the name of the agency as the author. For example, an author search for Central Intelligence Agency will direct you to the author United States Central Intelligence Agency, and then to the CIA's publications that are available in CONSORT libraries.

To find information from state agencies, consult the State Agency Databases section of the ALA-GODORT wiki.
