Using E-Res: A Guide for Students
Tips for using E-Res
- E-Res is best viewed using Netscape 2.0 or later.
- For best results, we recommend certain browser settings:
- Under the "Options" pull-down menu in Netscape, set "Show Directory Buttons" off.
- Under "General Preferences" / "Appearance", set the toolbar to display as text only, and set links so they are not underlined.
- If you are not using Netscape, set options as appropriate to maximize the display area of your screen, and set links to be displayed without underlines.
- Due to measures to ensure document security, it is not currently possible to right click on a document in order to view or download it. You can, however, download documents by left clicking to view, and then downloading once the document is displayed.
- An external viewer or a plug-in may be required to display certain files, notably, word processor documents, Adobe PDF files, spreadsheets, and postscript files. If you do not yet have an appropriate external (helper) application established, your browser will pop open an assistance box after you click on the document description. Use it to select the appropriate application on your computer. For example, if the format type listed in the assistance box is "application/excel", select the Excel application on your local computer.
- To download external (helper) applications, click on the "Problems Viewing? Read this!" link at the top of your course page.
- For most viewers, after you download the file you will need to run it in order to install the application on your local computer:
- Use the back arrow feature of your browser to the return to the E-Res screen on which you were working.
