Circulation Services

Borrowing

Borrowing privileges are limited to Kenyon College students, faculty, alumni, staff, their families, guest borrowers, KAP students and Consort/OhioLINK patrons. Kenyon students and employees must present their own Kenyon ID and guest borrowers are required to use their library cards to borrow library materials. No item of any type will be charged out without proper bar-coded Kenyon library ID.

Kenyon College books should be returned to the Circulation Desk. If the library is closed, books may be returned to the book drops located in each library entrance and one is located near the dock behind the library. Interlibrary loan materials must be returned to the Circulation Desk. Videos/AV equipment checked out at the Circulation Desk must be returned to the Circulation Desk. Videos/DVDs checked out in Multimedia Collections must be returned to Multimedia Collections.

Video Circulation Policies

Kenyon Students and Staff with valid I.D. can check out circulating videos for one day which are due 2:00am of the day following day and must be returned to the Circulation Desk. (Until midnight, videos checked out from Multimedia Collections must be returned to Multimedia Collections. However, the Circulation Desk will accept videos between midnight and 2 a.m ). Students are limited to 3 videos during any given time, and cannot renew videos.

Kenyon Faculty, Administrators, and Staff with valid I.D. can check out videos for 7 days, and can renew videos up to two times, for a total of 21 days.

Because Kenyon's video collection is developed and maintained to support the academic mission of the college, videos cannot be checked out by Alumni, Families, Guest Borrowers, Knox County Teachers, KAP students or OhioLINK patrons.

Overdue videos, like overdue items of any type, will result in a block, meaning that the patron cannot check out additional items of any type until the overdue item is renewed (if allowed) or returned. Replacement costs for lost or damaged videos are $100.00 plus a $25.00 processing fee, plus fines up to $100.00.

Please note that Kenyon does not own public performance viewing rights for some videos in our collection, which means they cannot be shown to groups. Please check with Carmen King before attempting to show any video to any group of people.

For more information about Kenyon's video collection, please see the Multimedia Collections web pages.

The following materials do not circulate:

  • Periodicals, Microfilms, Reference Materials, Special Collections and Archives Materials.
  • Sound Recordings do not circulate outside the Multimedia Collections Unit except to faculty. Please see the Multimedia Collections web pages for more information about Kenyon's music collection.

Blocks on Circulation

An overdue item of any type will immediately cause a "block," preventing the patron from charging out any additional materials of any type. The purpose of the block is simply to preserve Kenyon's collections -- and those of our consortial partners -- by ensuring that materials are returned.

Although strict, this block should not be an undue hardship since many materials can be renewed online. For example, faculty can easily renew books, CDs, or videos (up to 2 times) to remove a block on their account. Students can easily renew books to remove a block generated by an overdue book. (Students cannot remove a block generated by an overdue video except by returning the video; this is an intentional effort to preserve the video collection.)

Renewals, Recalls, and Holds

Kenyon and CONSORT books loaned for three weeks may be renewed indefinitely during the academic year unless the materials are recalled or a hold is placed. Materials charged for more than two weeks may be recalled for use by another borrower. Materials may be recalled for Course Reserves at any time. OhioLINK books may be renewed for only one additional three week period.

Kenyon Faculty, Adminstrators, or Staff can renew videos twice after the initial circulation period, for a total circulation time of 21 days. Videos must be returned at that time to the AudioVisual department.

Renewals

Items may be renewed Online or at the Circulation Desk by presenting your Kenyon ID or the items to be renewed.
