Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition Alert Messages

When a virus is detected by Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition (SAVCE), Symantec will display an Alert Message. All popups generated by SAVCE will take this format. Any other popup message referring to viruses should be disregarded. Some types of adware or spyware attempt to frighten people into buying products they don't need with popup ads.

There will be one alert for each virus infected file. Read this message carefully to determine what you should do to protect your data and network access. Pay particular attention to the Action Taken by Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition

  • Clean succeeded

The virus has been cleaned from the file, your computer is not infected by the virus. You can continue to work in a normal way.
  • Quarantine succeeded

In this case the file has been moved to a special and protected area where the file is locked, not executable. So you can delete the file or wait for a next version of virus definition file which may be able to clean the file (this is the theory; in practice it is very rarely that new definition are able to repair old quarantined files). If the virus has been identified as a Trojan, it can not be cleaned and should be deleted from Quarantine.
  • Clean failed, quarantine failed, access denied

This normally means that a virus is present and active on your machine. SAVCE cannot repair or quarantine an active file. Disconnect your computer from the network! Note the virus name mentioned in the Alert message. Using a lab computer or a computer that is not infected, research the virus at the Symantec web site at http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/vinfodb.html for specific removal instructions.
